Microdermabrasion FAQ:

What is microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a form of mechanical skin exfoliation also known as the "lunchtime peel." It is non-invasive and there is no down time after the treatment. A microdermabrasion machine is designed to remove the buildup of dead skin cells on the topmost layer of skin. It also promotes increased circulation and blood flow, which stimulates the regeneration of skin cells. Your skin will be left feeling supple and vibrant!

Who can benefit from a microdermabrasion treatment?

Microdermabrasion is great for all skin types! It can reduce the appearance of fine lines, acne scars, and hyperpigmentation from sun damage and/or melasma. It is effective in the removal of buildup of dead skin cells and stimulates the production of collagen and elastin, leaving the skin feeling fresh and with a healthy glow. Clients who have never had a microdermabrasion treatment should schedule a free consultation.

Does it hurt?

A wonderful alternative to chemical peels, microdermabrasion is non-invasive, virtually pain-free and requires no down time after treatment. Initially you will feel a light scratching on the face - I prefer to tell my clients that they should expect it to feel like a cat is licking them!

How often should I do it?

It depends on the results that you would like to achieve. Clients who would like to see more dramatic results should plan to have a treatment every 7 to 10 days for up to 12 visits. Clients looking to maintain should visit once a month. After your first treatment you will notice a healthy glow and softer, smoother skin. Skin may be pink immediately following your treatment but this is likely from the stimulation of blood flow and an increase in circulation.

Is it safe?

YES! I have chosen to use the NewApeel Aesthetic Exfoliation System, which utilizes the revolutionary DiamondTome Wands. Unlike machines that use potentially harmful aluminum oxide crystals, the NewApeel machine uses a diamond tipped wand to remove the outermost layer of skin, polishing it with natural diamond chips and vacuuming the dead skin cells in a controlled manner. Skin is left feeling softer, smoother and more vibrant. Best of all, there are no particles left on the skin or in the treatment area for the client or technician to inhale.

How long will it take?

Microdermabrasion can be done in 30 or 60 minutes, depending on the treatment that is chosen. A 30-minute treatment includes a skin analysis, facial cleansing, and toner to restore moisture and balance the skin. We will then do several passes over the skin with the NewApeel Aesthetic Exfoliation machine and finish off with eye cream, a serum and moisturizer that is appropriate for your skin type and, very importantly, an SPF to protect your skin. A 60-minute treatment will include all of the above as well as extractions, if necessary, and a 10-15 minute mask suitable to your skin type.

Are there any side effects?

Every skin type will react differently to microdermabrasion. At the very most, you may experience slightly pink skin immediately following a treatment. This is usually superficial and is due to erythema and NOT inflammation. This will subside in a few hours.
